What is dental IT support?

Dental IT support keeps a clinic’s computers, servers, network, backups, security, practice software and imaging equipment working. We help clinics and dentists follow Alberta HIA (Health Information Act), Alberta PIPA, BC PIPA (British Columbia Personal Information Protection Act), Canadian Dental Association (CDA) guidance on cybersecurity and their cyber insurance requirements, and we are the gold standard for bringing dental clinics into compliance. Local teams serve Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary, and a person answers (604) 813-7881 around the clock.

Privacy impact assessments are completed by the clinic, with lawyer Ritchie Po assisting. Check current rules. This is not legal advice.

Benson Hunt provides dental IT support for clinics in Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary. We look after practice software, imaging, servers, backups and cybersecurity, and we plan IT for new clinics.

We are a friendly team that knows dental offices well. Our team includes a dentist (DMD) and a registered dental hygienist (RDH) who advise on how a clinic runs, and our CTO is ITIL certified. Between us we have more than 40 years of combined experience.

Backups

A 3-2-1 backup plan with one copy offsite, plus immutable storage. We test restores so you know they work.

Here is what sits behind that.

  • A 3-2-1 backup plan plus immutable storage. That means several copies of your data, on more than one kind of storage, with one kept offsite, and backup copies that cannot be quietly changed or deleted.

RAID keeps a server running if one drive fails, but it is not a backup. We also test restores, so you find out your backups work before the day you need them.

If ransomware does hit, disconnect the affected computers from the network and call us right away. We help contain it, check your backups, restore clean systems and work out what was touched.

Security

Cisco Meraki, Cisco Secure Access DNS Defense and Huntress, with a human-led team at Huntress.

Here is what sits behind that.

  • Cisco Meraki for your network, Wi-Fi and firewall.
  • Cisco Secure Access DNS Defense for web and DNS filtering, which helps block bad sites before a workstation reaches them.
  • Huntress for detecting threats on computers and servers, backed by a human-led team at Huntress that reviews what the software finds.

Imaging

Sensors, plate scanners, CBCT and pan x-ray machines, on the network and IT side.

For questions about software features, call the software vendor. For everything underneath, call us. Clinics pay monthly or on a break fix basis, and projects such as new clinic cabling are quoted separately.

Which dental software do you support?

We are independent IT support, not the software vendor. We look after the IT side of your practice software and coordinate with the vendor’s support when an issue is inside the program. When we fix a problem, the technician repairs it and closes the ticket together with the office manager who reported it.

    • An outage needs the vendor’s support, and someone to coordinate the call.

Upgrades planned around clinic hours, and printers, shared folders and imaging links that keep working.

    • Tracker freezes or slows down on one workstation.
    • A computer loses its connection to the server or a shared folder.
    • Backups fail or run out of space.

    • A workstation that is older than the server after an upgrade, fixed by running Setup from the shared folder.
  • AkituOne, set up properly from day one

Installs and upgrades, backups, and each new workstation, printer and scanner configured for the practice.

    Common problems we fix
    • A workstation cannot open AkituOne or sign in after a change.
    • AkituOne is slow on one computer, or on every computer.
    • A new workstation, printer or scanner needs to be set up.
    • A sensor or imaging link stops working after a replacement.

Privacy overview

Privacy law is your clinic’s responsibility, and we do not give legal advice. We build the technical safeguards and point you to the official sources.

Privacy law is your clinic’s responsibility, and this is general information, not legal advice. Rules change, so please check current rules with the official sources and your lawyer.

  • Alberta. The Health Information Act (HIA) treats dentists as custodians of patient health information. Rules can cover written agreements with IT providers, privacy impact assessments and breach reporting to the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta (OIPC), and the College of Dental Surgeons of Alberta (CDSA) publishes guidance. Your clinic is responsible for completing any privacy impact assessment (PIA) on a reasonable schedule. We work with lawyer Ritchie Po, part of our MSP, to assist with your PIA.
  • British Columbia. BC’s private sector privacy law, the Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA), is one of the rules to check, along with the standards of the British Columbia College of Oral Health Professionals (BCCOHP, which took over from the College of Dental Surgeons of BC) and the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia (OIPC BC).

On our side, we build the technical safeguards: encryption, multi-factor sign in, patching, access reviews, logging and tested backups. Your city page has more detail.
